USAID commends resettlement programme
The Sri Lankan Government's highly successful programme to resettle the internally displaced people of the North and East came under praise when Trekor Hublin, Deputy Director of USAID met the Minister of Resettlement Gunarathna Weerakoon at his ministry on Monday (14 May).
Mr.Hublin commended the Sri Lanka Government's genuine efforts in resettling the displaced people back in their former places in the once war ravaged North and East. The Government's policy for resettlement is transparent and firm. The Government has taken up the resettlement and upliftment of the IDPs livelihood and providing proper housing for them as one of its top priorities.
With the development of basic infrastructure facilities like roads, water supply, electricity, telecommunication, housing and sanitation people who once left their homes in the North and East are returning to start a new life. Commercial establishments and private business houses are rushing in to set up shop there. Shops are full of international brands and business is booming.
It is about time that the expatriate Tamil community starts noticing the positive steps taken by the Government in rebuilding the North and East. It is their obligation to assist their brethren to restart life rather than being a stumbling block. The reprehensible acts of the LTTE rump now holed up abroad in destabilizing the Government's peace initiatives will only cause impediment in the resettlement and development process of the North and East.
Secretary to the ministry Mr. W. M. Bandusena and Political Officer of the US Embassy Mr. Jacob Chiriqui were also present at the meeting.
