Apply for a Sri Lanka Visa
Short-stay visitors to Sri Lanka are required to have an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) Visa to enter the country. This visa option is for businesspeople, tourists and all visitors to Sri Lanka who intends to stay for less than 30 days.
To secure a Sri Lanka ETA Visa you must apply to the Sri Lankan Department of Immigration and Emigration.

Key Requirements
The Government of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka made the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) visa a compulsory part of the immigration system on 1 January, 2012.

There are 4 types of Sri Lanka ETA visa currently available:

  • ETA tourist visa with double entry for 30 days;
  • ETA business visa with multiple entry for 30 days;
  • ETA transit visa with single entry for up to seven days.
  • ETA transit visa with single entry for up to two days.

Sri Lanka ETA Visa Conditions
Once an ETA visa to Sri Lanka has been secured, visa holders must be able to show the following requirements at point of entry into Sri Lanka:  

  • A passport valid for a minimum period of six months;
  • A round trip ticket to show at the port of entry in Sri Lanka (only if you are travelling by air); and
  • Evidence of adequate funds to meet your expenses during your stay in Sri Lanka.

Applying for a Sri Lanka ETA visa
The easiest way to apply for a Sri Lanka ETA Visa is to make an application to the Sri Lankan Department of Immigration and Emigration online.

The Department of Immigration and Emigration also allows applications to be submitted using the following five options:

  • Third parties to the applicant;
  • Registered Agents;
  • Sri Lanka Overseas Missions;
  • At the head office of the Department of Immigration and Emigration; and
  • On arrival at the point of entry.

If an applicant is accepted they will be informed within 24 hours of acceptance and are entitled to enter Sri Lanka within three months of the date of issue. In the event of a Sri Lanka ETA visa rejection, a referral notice will be sent to the applicant so that they may seek assistance from a Sri Lanka Overseas Mission. The department maintains a no refund policy.

Please note: Nationals of the following countries who visit Sri Lanka for a Short Visit up to 30 days are exempt from requiring a Sri Lanka ETA Visa:

  • The Republic of Singapore.  
  • The Republic of Maldives.
