About the Embassy

The Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka recognized the State of Israel in 1950. The diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and Israel were established on 01st June 1956 which was resumed in May 2000. Sri Lanka opened its resident Mission in Tel Aviv in October 2000. While Israel does not have a resident Mission in Sri Lanka, the Embassy of Israel in New Delhi is concurrently accredited to Sri Lanka.

Bilateral relations between the two countries are cordial and friendly. Exchange of bilateral visits further strengthened the existing relations between the two countries.

The Embassy continues to facilitate and co-ordinate trade activities on the economic front which is the principal focus at present. The Embassy continuously seeks opportunities for trade and investment promotion with the Israeli private and public sectors. The major exports from Sri Lanka to Israel are diamonds, precious stones, tea, rubber and rubber based products, coconut and coconut fiber, articles of apparel and accessories.

There are approximately 7000 Sri Lankans working in Israel in the caregiving sector. Under an agreement signed between the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) and Population and Boarder Authority (PIBA) in Israel, Sri Lankans are recruited for seasonal agricultural work in Israel in small scale since the year 2010. The Embassy provides a range of consular services to attend to the needs of the Sri Lankan community based in Israel and to maintain and strengthen the relationships between the two countries.
