Upper Kotmale hydro power plant to be completed in June
(08.05.2012) Ninety six percent of the construction of the Upper Kotmale hydro power plant has been completed. The Upper Kotmale Hydro Power Plant will generate 150 megawatts of electricity.
It already generates 75 megawatts and 150 megawatts will be added to the national grid by this June, Power and Energy Ministry sources said. President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Japanese Deputy Prime Minister Katsuya Okada inspected the Upper Kotmale Hydro Power Project on Saturday. The power plant project commenced in 2006 to meet the increasing demand for electricity. The Japanese government provided 37,817 million yen for the project. The Ceylon Electricity Board spent Rs 8,548 million on the project.
The Upper Kotmale tunnel of 12.9kms, is the longest in Sri Lanka. It was opened by President Mahinda Rajapaksa in November 2010.
All measures are in place to generate 409 gigawatts annually with a permanent capacity of 150 megawatts. The whole electricity generating procedure will be carried out in an eco-friendly manner.
The government has taken measures to grant new homes to families displaced due to the Upper Kotmale Hydro Power Plant project.
It has established 495 homes with all facilities including electricity and drinking water.
The government has spent Rs 77 million to build a bridge through Kotmale Oya connecting Talawakele to facilitate transport in the area.
All measures are in place to add the electricity generated by the Upper Kotmale Hydro Power Plant to the national grid within the first two weeks of next month.
