The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Tel Aviv celebrated the 68th anniversary of Independence of Sri Lanka

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Tel Aviv celebrated the 68th anniversary of Independence of Sri Lanka on the 04th of February 2016 at the Embassy premises with the participation of Israeli well-wishers and a cross section of the Sri Lankan community living in Israel. The National Day events commenced with the hoisting of the Sri Lankan National Flag by Ambassador Periyasamy Pillai Selvaraj, followed by the singing of the National Anthem and lighting of the traditional oil lamp. The Sri Lankan national anthem was sung in Sinhala and Tamil at the ceremony.

Two minutes silence was observed in honour of the national heroes of Sri Lanka who sacrificed their lives to preserve and protect the freedom, unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Sri Lanka. Multi- religious observances were conducted by the religious dignitaries to bless Sri Lanka and its people.

The Independence Day messages of President Maithripala Sirisena, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera were read out in Sinhala, Tamil and English to the gathering.

Ambassador Selvaraj, in his remarks, highlighted the importance of unity of all communities for the development of Sri Lanka. He further stated the progress of the socio, economic and development activities in Sri Lanka and the ongoing bilateral relations between Sri Lanka and Israel. He also expressed that people-to-people contacts between the two countries would further enhance the existing relationship.

The ceremony concluded with the serving of traditional Sri Lankan breakfast.
