70th Independence Day Anniversary – Embassy of Sri Lanka, Tel Aviv

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Israel celebrated the 70th anniversary of Independence of Sri Lanka on 04th of February 2018 at the Embassy premises with the participation of a cross section of the Sri Lankan community living in Israel, the Embassy officials, their families and Israeli well-wishers. The National Day events commenced with the hoisting of the National Flag of Sri Lanka by Ambassador Periyasamy Pillai Selvaraj, followed by singing of the National Anthem both in Sinhala and Tamil Languages.

Thereafter, two minutes silence was observed in remembrance of all those who sacrificed their lives on behalf of the nation.

The traditional oil lamp was lit by the Embassy officials, members of the Sri Lankan community and Israeli friends. Multi- religious observances were conducted by the religious dignitaries to bless Sri Lanka and its people.

The Independence Day messages of the President, Prime Minister and the Minister of Foreign Affairs were read in Sinhala, Tamil and English.

Addressing the gathering, Ambassador Selvaraj highlighted the significance of the independence celebrations and emphasized the importance of unity amongst all communities for the development of Sri Lanka. He further elaborated on the current progress of the socio, economic development activities in Sri Lanka and urged the Sri Lankan community in Israel to contribute towards the betterment of Sri Lanka.

He briefed the audience regarding the current relations between Sri Lanka and Israel and expressed that people-to-people contact between the two countries would further enhance the existing relations. He also congratulated and thanked the Sri Lankan community in Israel for their contribution to the development of Sri Lanka.

On this auspicious occasion, the members of Sri Lankan community sang patriotic songs which were appreciated by the participants.

At the end of the ceremony, traditional Sri Lankan food items were served to the participants.
