Registration of Marriages

General procedure

  • One of the parties to the marriage should be a Sri Lankan Citizen and should give Notice of Marriage to the Embassy. (Forms are available at the Embassy  or may be upload from the Register General’s Department website
  • The marriage can be registered in the Embassy after a lapse of twelve (12) working days from the date of receipt of the Notice of Marriage and within three (03) months from such date.
  • Valid passport of both parties should be produced and both parties should be present at the Embassy in person
  • Two (02) witnesses should possess valid passports or other proper identification. This is compulsory.
  • Birth Certificates of both parties
  • The originals of the following documents are required for the registration of a marriage:

a. Passport
b. Bachelor Certificate/Spinster Certificate
c. Notice of Marriage
d. Birth Certificate – certified by the Consular Division of the Ministry of External Affairs

  • Marriage  between two Sri Lankan Citizens:Both parties should obtain a Bachelor Certificate issued by an Attorney at Law or JP which should be endorsed by the Justice Ministry of Sri Lanka and thereafter certified  by the Consular Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Colombo
  • Marriage between a Sri Lankan citizen and non – Sri Lankan Citizen:Bachelor Certificates should be obtained by the Sri Lankan Citizen. (Procedure is the same as above.)

The other party to the marriage is required to obtain a Bachelor Certificate from the Embassy of his/her country.

(Charges for notice of marriage US $ 20 + Registration of Marriage US $ 33)
b. Registration of Marriage under special license – US $ 44 (NIS 176)
c. Issuance of certified copy of marriage - US $ 13 (NIS 52)
